Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Secret for Success

Arnold Schwarzenegger, a man of many great achievements – internationally renowned bodybuilder, A-list Hollywood actor and two-term Governor of California – doesn’t have a “secret” for success, instead, he follows a formula that any one of us can also follow. It’s actually quite simple, “What you do is create a vision of who you want to be, and then live into that picture as if it were already true.”

The verb “create” is the operative word in his formula. It doesn’t include following a path in life that someone else believes you should or that has been laid out for you. Anything is possible when you adopt this way of thinking and Schwarzenegger is a testament to that.

Write your vision statement

We’re all familiar with vision statements in a business context, but they also apply personally. When you create a vision for yourself, you need to spell it out just as Schwarzenegger did in 1976 when he decided to transition from bodybuilding powerhouse to silver screen superstar.

He met with Steve Chandler, a newspaper columnist in Tucson, Arizona at the time (now a master success coach) and shared this vision: “I’m going to be the number-one box-office star in all of Hollywood.” In 1977, he won a Golden Globe for Best Acting Debut in a Motion Picture for Stay Hungry.

“The most important thing is to have a vision,” says Schwarzenegger. “Your goal doesn’t have to be the same that mine was, but it has to be there. That’s why I always recommend to people to sit down, take your time, and think about what you want.”

Live your vision

Yes, having a clear vision of who you want to be is a massive part of the equation but you won’t become who you want to be without taking action. As Dr. Nathaniel Branden, self-esteem expert and author of nearly 20 books on the subject once said, “a goal without any action plan is a daydream.”

Start living your vision as if it’s already true. Doing so requires being mindful of the things you do in your daily life. Ask yourself often, does this decision or action play into my vision? Adapt accordingly.

Creating and living the vision of who you want to be is something you can do right now. Who you want to be today may not be the same person you want to be tomorrow, but that’s ok – it’s all about being who you want to be in this moment.
